Transformers was a traditionally animated cartoon. Thus static background art was hand-painted in addition to the acetate cels that depicted characters in motion. The vast majority of surviving Transformers background paintings are permanently attached to cels, making undamaged, stand-alone backgrounds quite a rarity. For the animation fan, collecting backgrounds is an opportunity to own art of key locations and settings from the cartoon's mythology.
